How to stage small houses to look bigger

We have mentioned a few times that buyers will always look for bigger spaces when looking for a home. The bigger the free space a house has, the more attractive it is to them. But what if your house is small? Aiming it to be sold as quickly as possible might be a challenge. Today at Home Staging Pueblo Colorado, we will be providing some tips that can help you stage your house to look bigger.

1. Declutter
Yup, we said it again. It’s time to remove the things and stuff that are not needed on your house either by selling them or moving them to another location. This will free up some space that you have not realized. It is preferred to go through this process 2 to 3 times just to be sure that you have decluttered your house enough. This is one of the easiest things to do that makes the biggest impact.

2. Removing rugs
I know this doesn’t make sense but read this out first. Rugs are comfortable and it does serve its purpose. But come to think of it, we usually put rags at certain locations within our house to mark its boundaries or locations. For example, putting a rug at the center of your living room, underneath your coffee table, sofa and armchairs makes it a marker that gives a signal that this part of the living room is the center. Rugs stop your eye once you have seen its edges. Removing these rugs on your house gives the impression that you have a bigger floor space and makes it look that it goes on and on.

3. Use smaller furniture
It is comfortable and convenient to use larger furniture for your daily use but having smaller once will free up some more space thus making your house look bigger. To home buyers, it will make it appear that you can fit some more items and this help them to imagine their own furniture in the home easier. Tip: use furniture that is smaller at the bottom or can be lifted off the ground easily. This gives the illusion that there is more floor space.

4. Empty closets
We have mentioned before that closets are clutter traps. So, once again, remove the stuff that’s not really needed in this area. You may also have to go through this for 2 or 3 times just to be sure. You can make your closet look neat and organized with these tips:
- Make it look spacious by keeping empty spaces
- Do not pack items to the sides in tight
- Let the buyers see the back, sides, and height of storage spaces
- Use storage containers to make it look neat
- Space out hangers in your closet to give the illusion of more space
- Keep the floor free from stuff as much as you can

5. Remove large items out of the garage
Buyers will also have to look for your garage. It will really help if you remove your vehicles and other large items during open house or showings. You will also have to do the same decluttering process here. The more stuff you remove, the more space you can gain. This helps the buyer envision their own things easier.

6. Brighten up
We have mentioned already in our previous blogs the role of light in home staging and how it creates the illusion of more space. As a tip, apply a fresh coat of paint with light color to your walls and trim if possible. Make sure to turn on all lights and open all curtains so that natural light (sunlight) can come into your house. This will definitely make your house look bigger.
