Any home stager will tell you many times that you will have to declutter your house for it to be staged properly. Based from our home staging and home redesign experience, these 3 locations that we will mention are the worst clutter traps that we see on most homes that we have staged. And today, we will also provide some tips on how to declutter these 3 locations.
We usually put a lot of our extra stuff the we use daily on our closets. But a cluttered closet can give a bad impression on a buyer. Not it makes your home less spacious but it also gives an impression of an unorganized home. Remember that buyers will open your closet doors to see how much space it has for them to keep their stuff.
To declutter your closet, pack away seasonal clothing and organize hanged items by size or color. And remove things on the closet floor. This is especially important for master bedrooms. Also inspect your pantry as well, wiping down your shelves, have the labels straightened and remove anything that aren’t used.
- Tabletops and counters
This area needs to be decluttered but it does not mean that you need to remove everything on it. Just make sure that you keep your décor strategic and minimal.
To declutter this area, store all kitchen appliances under the cabinets. Dish soap and sponges should go in a plastic bin under the sink. All items of personal hygiene and appliance should be removed from bathroom counters.
- You may add a simple potted plant and some books to a nightstand.
- You may put a bowl of lemons in the kitchen counter. Click here to get more kitchen staging tips.

This can be tricky because it gives buyers the impression of lack of space if this area is overflowing or tightly stacked.
To declutter and give a bit of aesthetic look, pack up most of your books, leaving some stacked vertically and some horizontally with space between groupings. Placing some ornaments should be okay but make sure not to overdo it.
